A leading body of Islamic scholars has criticised reported efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, warning that linking wider regional agreements to normalisation with Israel risks entrenching existing power imbalances in the Middle East.
In a statement, the International Union of Muslim Scholars said it opposed what it described as attempts to advance political arrangements in the region under external pressure. It argued that such initiatives, if pursued while Israeli policies in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories continue, amount to granting political legitimacy without addressing underlying grievances.
The group also referred to reports suggesting that US diplomacy may seek to connect broader regional understandings, including tensions involving Iran, to further normalisation agreements with Israel. It said this approach reflects a strategy aimed at reshaping regional alignments without securing what it called meaningful justice for Palestinians.
The scholars’ body urged religious institutions across the Muslim world to take a clear stance on the issue and called for greater coordination among Muslim-majority countries in support of Palestinian rights. It said any durable stability would require addressing what it described as the ongoing realities of occupation and displacement.
