The Palestinian detainee Maher al-Akhras has been on hunger strike for 85 consecutive days in protest of his administrative detention and he is in a serious and very worrying health condition.

The chairman of the Prisoner's Club, Qaddoura Fares, said that al-Akhras has reached the most critical stage, stressing the need to intensify efforts in the next few hours, in order to ensure his safety and victory in his battle against administrative detention.

Fares called on the Palestinian national movement to urgently take firm decisions to boycott all the so-called Israeli justice institutions because dealing with them gives them a kind of legitimacy.

Al-Akhras, who has been transferred to Kaplan Medical Center in central Israel, suffers from constant headaches, severe fatigue, weight loss, and constant ear buzzing, and could not get off the bed, even to go to the toilet, due to severe pains.

The hunger-striking detainee's wife, Taghreed al-Akhras, spoke previously of the condition of her husband, saying “My husband’s health is constantly worsening and his spasms are now frequent and dangerous.” She pointed out that he was not taking nutrients, except for water.

However, the Israeli authorities continue to refuse to release al-Akhras and end his administrative detention, despite warnings from human rights organizations and Palestinian political parties that al-Akhras is on the verge of death in light of the severe danger that his health condition has reached.

Israel’s Supreme Court has refused on 12 October the request for the immediate release of al-Akhras, which was submitted by his attorney.

Al-Akhras, 49, a father of six children, was detained four times before. He was first detained in 1989, when he spent seven months in detention, for the second time in 2004, when he spent two years in detention and once again in 2009 when he was held for 16 months in administrative detention, and another time in 2018 when he spent 11 months in detention.

He was recently detained on July 27, 2020, and has been sentenced to four months in administrative detention without charge or trial.

It is noteworthy that there are around 350 Palestinian administrative detainees held in Israeli detention for their political activities against the oppression committed by Israel.
