The Cost of Truth: Journalists' Lives in Gaza

Palestinian journalist Mohammed Balousha, a reporter for Al-Mashhad channel, was killed following an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home on Ahmed Yassin Street in the Al-Saftawi neighbourhood, north of the Gaza Strip. His death raises the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since 7 October 2023 to 195.

Balousha had previously gained attention for a video he recorded in December last year, documenting his suffering after being shot in the foot and left to bleed for hours in a remote area before rescue. Palestinian journalists and human rights activists argue that their commitment to documenting the truth undermines Israel's attempts to silence their narrative and obscure its actions from the international community. They emphasise the need to pursue legal action through international courts to ensure accountability.

Journalist Ruba Al-Ajrami highlighted how Palestinian journalists are displaced while carrying their families' burdens and continuing their media work despite immense danger and a lack of basic resources. Dia’a Al-Kahlout, a reporter for Al-Arabi Al-Jadid, shared his personal experience of detention and threats, stressing the widespread targeting of journalists and their families since the war began. Despite these risks, Al-Kahlout has provided testimony to international organisations and pursued legal action to highlight these violations.

Mohammed Quraiqea from Al-Jazeera accused the Israeli occupation of trying to suppress the narrative by killing and targeting journalists, with 195 killed, dozens detained, and hundreds injured since the war began. He criticised the lack of international action and solidarity, stating that media coverage must be amplified to expose the severity of these violations. Quraiqea called on the international community to act and pressure Israel to halt its attacks on journalists.

In Gaza, transmitting the truth comes at a devastating cost, and activists and journalists alike continue their mission at great personal risk.
