Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, described Tuesday as one of the darkest days in the hospital's history. Israeli warplanes struck over eight buildings surrounding the hospital, leaving children trapped under charred rubble. "Some people emerged from the debris with their bodies aflame, and several tragically lost their lives," Dr. Abu Safiya recounted.
The assault claimed the lives of eight civilians, with the hospital itself coming under direct attack. Tank shells targeted the intensive care unit (ICU) on the western side, igniting a fire that forced staff to evacuate patients amid chaos. "We managed to save the oxygen cylinders from the emergency room, but the isolation ward was completely destroyed," he said. With no fire extinguishers and the water supply cut off, staff were left to extinguish the flames with their bare hands.
Dr. Abu Safiya lamented the world's inaction, despite 75 days of urgent appeals. "This silence emboldens the occupiers to escalate their violence. I fear further attacks could destroy the hospital entirely, right before the eyes of the world," he warned. The hospital currently cares for 71 injured patients, with its ICU being the only one serving northern Gaza.
The destruction extended to a nearby house sheltering displaced families from the Ashqar and Al-Suwaiti clans. Eight civilians were killed in the bombing, with others injured. The Israeli forces also surrounded the hospital, deploying explosive robots and launching over ten bombs using drones.
The assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital is part of a broader, relentless campaign against Gaza, now in its 439th day. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israeli aggression since October 7, 2023, has resulted in 45,059 martyrs, over 107,000 wounded, and countless missing individuals. The Strip faces widespread destruction, famine, and mounting deaths among children and the elderly due to starvation and untreated injuries.
