Eight members of the Al-Badi family have been living for over 70 days under a nylon tent in harsh weather conditions. Initially, they believed the tent would protect them from the winter season’s rain, but the recent low-pressure system revealed it to be fragile, collapsing under the rain and leaving them exposed. Like many others in Gaza, the family was forced to flee their home in Beit Lahia due to the ongoing Israeli assault, seeking refuge in Yarmouk Stadium in Gaza City.
Hiam Al-Badi, 54, explained, "The rain stormed the tent while water was also pouring from its roof." The family’s home in Beit Lahia was destroyed by the bombings, and they now face worsening conditions in the stadium's makeshift shelters. Among the displaced are Hiam’s granddaughters, Hiam, 4, and Laila, 2, whose father, Muhammad Al-Badi, was killed in an Israeli drone strike on a gathering of civilians.
"We have lost the most basic elements of a decent life, and we do not have any means to protect ourselves from the cold," Hiam said, showing visible signs of distress. The Yarmouk Stadium, now home to hundreds of displaced families, has become a symbol of the ongoing crisis.
The Warsh Agha family, displaced from Lahia, faces similar hardships. Abeer Warsh Agha, living with 16 family members in two tents, expressed concern about the coming rain, fearing that it would flood their shelter again. They have no access to adequate warmth, cleanliness, or necessary medications, and the health of family members with cerebral palsy has worsened in the unsanitary conditions.
"We are terrified that the rain will soak our tents, clothes, and blankets, making our already dire situation even worse," Abeer said, her voice filled with worry as she looked at her family. The struggle of the displaced families in Gaza continues to grow as they face the combined impacts of the ongoing war and harsh weather.
