Hundreds of thousands of patients in Gaza are on the brink of death due to the ongoing Israeli blockade and relentless military assault, which have brought the region's healthcare system to the edge of collapse. According to Gaza's Government Media Office, the worsening health crisis poses an existential threat to the lives of those suffering from chronic illnesses, with the most vulnerable facing catastrophic outcomes due to a severe shortage of medicines and medical supplies.
As of March 19, the situation has become critical, with an estimated 350,000 chronic patients at high risk. Among them, 10,000 cancer patients are facing life-threatening conditions as they are unable to access essential treatments. The dire health situation is further compounded by the spread of infectious diseases, affecting approximately 700,000 displaced people. Additionally, around 8,000 cases of hepatitis C have been reported, exacerbated by the ongoing destruction and mass displacement.
One of the most urgent crises is the growing number of kidney failure patients in Gaza. Prior to October 7, the Ministry of Health's six dialysis centres were able to provide 13,000 dialysis sessions per month, but due to the ongoing aggression, this number has been halved.
The supply of essential medical equipment, such as dialysis filters and blood transfusion tubes, is rapidly depleting, with health authorities warning that stocks are nearly exhausted. As a result, 70% of kidney failure patients now face severe health risks due to the lack of access to treatment, compounded by the difficulty of reaching medical centres and the restrictions on aid.
Health experts in Gaza are urgently calling for the opening of humanitarian corridors to allow the delivery of life-saving medical supplies, warning that without immediate intervention, the health sector will collapse entirely. If the blockade continues and the situation remains unchanged, the lives of thousands of patients in Gaza will be lost.
