The Israeli occupation authorities have extended the detention of Jordanian doctor Abdullah Al-Balwi until Sunday, 5 January. Dr. Al-Balwi, a 38-year-old physician participating in a medical relief campaign for Gaza, was arrested on 19 December at the King Hussein Bridge crossing.
The medical campaign, organised by PANZMA with official approval from Israeli authorities, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Despite this, Israeli forces detained Dr. Al-Balwi upon his entry into the Israeli-controlled side of the crossing, citing an ongoing investigation. Since his arrest, he has been held without access to legal counsel, with a decision barring him from meeting his lawyer.
Dr. Al-Balwi's family has expressed deep concern over his situation, labelling the arrest as a deliberate attempt by Israel to intimidate humanitarian workers and medical professionals assisting Gaza. His father, Al-Hajj Salama Al-Balwi, revealed that his son remains in enforced disappearance. Israeli authorities have reportedly denied access to legal representation and refused requests from the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to visit him.
This case highlights the increasing challenges faced by international aid workers attempting to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s besieged population. It also raises urgent questions about Israel's treatment of humanitarian missions and its respect for international law.
