The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, condemned the ongoing human rights catastrophe in Gaza, accusing the world of turning a blind eye to the suffering of Palestinians. Speaking to the UN Security Council in New York, Turk outlined the devastating impact of Israeli occupation, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, widespread displacement, and the destruction of vital infrastructure.
Turk’s remarks were based on a recent report covering the period from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024. The report documented Israeli attacks on hospitals, starting with airstrikes followed by ground incursions, which led to the detention of patients and staff, crippling the ability of medical facilities to function. He stressed the critical importance of protecting hospitals during wartime, emphasizing that these protections must be respected by all parties involved.
One of the most tragic examples of Israeli aggression, according to Turk, was the destruction of Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last functioning medical facility in northern Gaza. Hospital staff and patients were forced to flee, while some were detained and subjected to torture and abuse. This act, along with many others, represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
Turk declared that deliberate attacks on hospitals and medical facilities are war crimes, stressing that healthcare centers are not military targets. Furthermore, he warned that such destruction could amount to collective punishment, which also constitutes a war crime.
These remarks underscore the urgent need for the international community to take action and hold Israel accountable for its actions, which continue to devastate Gaza’s civilian population.
