Khan Younis Municipality Warns of Service Shutdown Amid Fuel Shortages

The municipality of Khan Younis in southern Gaza has announced the near-total collapse of its water, sanitation, and waste collection services due to a severe shortage of diesel fuel. Essential services have been reduced to just 40% capacity, with operations expected to cease entirely if fuel supplies are not replenished imminently.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Emergency Committee of Khan Younis Municipality revealed that diesel reserves required to power water pumps, sewage stations, and waste collection vehicles are almost depleted. The shortage is attributed to irregular and insufficient fuel deliveries from partner organisations, exacerbated by the ongoing emergency situation.

The municipality highlighted its relentless efforts to maintain minimal essential services amidst the devastating humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s continued war on Gaza. The conflict has resulted in widespread destruction of roads, water systems, and critical infrastructure, further compounding the dire living conditions.

Adding to the burden, Khan Younis has seen an overwhelming influx of displaced individuals seeking refuge. International and UN statistics estimate that approximately 1.1 million displaced and resident individuals are now in the area. Despite the challenges, the municipality continues to strive to meet their needs and alleviate their suffering.
