Recently released Palestinian detainees have shared harrowing testimonies of systematic torture, deliberate medical neglect, and inhumane treatment endured during their time in Israeli occupation prisons. Their stories highlight the devastating physical and psychological toll of detention.
Rola Hasanein, a journalist among the first detainees released, emerged in a state of severe exhaustion, requiring urgent medical attention. Her sister revealed that Rola’s health had significantly declined due to persistent medical neglect during her detention. This neglect, commonly reported by released detainees, underscores the systematic disregard for detainees’ basic health rights.
Adam Al-Hadra, another released detainee, described his ordeal, from the moment of his arrest to his release. He endured inhumane conditions, compounded by the denial of medication for himself and other detainees, including elderly prisoners. This deliberate neglect reflects the cruelty embedded in the occupation’s prison policies, aimed at breaking detainees both physically and mentally.
Shaima Omar Ramadan recounted her experience of being detained for six months without clear charges or sentencing. She learned of her inclusion in the release only on the day it occurred, a practice emblematic of the opaque and arbitrary nature of the Israeli detention system. Such uncertainty exacerbates the psychological suffering of detainees, who are kept in constant limbo.
Samah Hijawi, detained for the second time, detailed the physical and emotional torture she faced during imprisonment. She disclosed the dire conditions faced by female detainees, many of whom were ill and subjected to deliberate medical neglect. These experiences reveal a systematic effort to dehumanize Palestinian prisoners, particularly women.
The release of 90 detainees, including women and children, from Ofer Prison west of Ramallah, sheds light on the plight of thousands who remain in Israeli custody. Their testimonies are a grim reminder of the systematic violations within Israeli detention facilities, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention to ensure accountability and uphold detainees’ rights.
