Israel Systematically Terrorises Released Palestinian Prisoners

The Prisoners' Media Office in Gaza has reported that Israel systematically harasses and persecutes Palestinian prisoners and their families before and after their release as part of the recent three-phase ceasefire agreement. The occupation authorities employ intimidation tactics, including threats of assassination, re-arrest, home raids, and physical assaults, in an attempt to instill fear and prevent public celebrations of freedom. The Office has documented numerous violations, highlighting that Israeli forces began targeting released prisoners even before their actual release.

One such case is that of Raed Badwan from Badu, north of occupied Jerusalem, whose home was stormed by Israeli forces. Soldiers destroyed his belongings, subjected him to a brutal beating, and left him with injuries requiring hospitalisation—all under the pretext that he was preparing to celebrate his release. Similarly, Zaid Amer’s family in Nablus received threats of having their reception hall bombed if they hosted supporters celebrating his freedom. Meanwhile, freed journalist Ashwaq Awad was summoned for interrogation at Etzion detention centre, reinforcing the systematic repression targeting former prisoners.

Palestinian rights groups have condemned Israel’s ongoing campaign of terror against released detainees, calling it a continuation of the brutal treatment they endured in prison. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society has urged international mediators to intervene, emphasising the urgent need to protect those freed under the ceasefire deal. Israel has so far listed over 700 Palestinian prisoners set for release, with more than 230 facing permanent exile. Despite Israel’s attempts to break Palestinian resistance, Hamas declared that the occupation was forced to "open its prison doors" after months of relentless and unprecedented aggression against Gaza.
