Taysir Said Sababa, a Palestinian detainee from Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, has died while held in Israeli custody, according to his family. His daughter Abeer announced the news in a deeply emotional message on social media, mourning her father as a symbol of strength and sacrifice. Prisoner rights groups have yet to officially confirm the cause or circumstances of his death.
Sababa was reportedly arrested on 7 October 2024, exactly one year after the start of the current Israeli military campaign against Gaza. His death brings the total number of Palestinian detainees who have died in Israeli prisons since the escalation began to at least 60—an alarming figure that includes over 40 prisoners from Gaza alone.
Human rights groups are calling this the deadliest period for Palestinian prisoners in history. These deaths, many of which remain shrouded in secrecy, have raised serious concerns about the conditions and treatment of detainees. Families are often left without answers, and the silence from authorities only deepens their pain.
Since 1967, at least 297 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli prisons. As the war continues, that number is rising at an unprecedented rate. For many in Gaza and beyond, Sababa’s death is not just another name on a list—it is a stark reminder of the human cost of indefinite detention and the brutal realities facing Palestinians behind bars.
