In a move widely criticised as a suppression of free expression, Columbia University has suspended over 65 students after they took part in a peaceful protest calling for an end to Israel's devastating assault on Gaza. The demonstration, held inside the historic Butler Library, was part of a growing wave of student-led actions across American campuses demanding justice for Palestinians and an end to what many describe as a genocidal war.
University officials confirmed that dozens of students were arrested and are now facing internal disciplinary procedures, while more than 30 others—some alumni—have been banned from accessing the university's main campus. This comes as U.S. academic institutions increasingly face scrutiny for their heavy-handed response to student dissent in support of Palestine.
Since October 2023, Israel's relentless military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 52,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. Student protesters at Columbia and elsewhere have condemned Washington’s unconditional backing of these atrocities, pointing to the flow of military aid and unwavering political support.
Palestinian advocates argue that the crackdown on student activism in the U.S. mirrors a broader effort to silence voices that challenge the status quo. As university halls echo with chants for freedom and justice, the price for standing with Gaza appears to be growing alarmingly high.
