Rescue Efforts Suspended in Jabalia as Over 50 Remain Trapped Beneath the Rubble

For the 592nd day, Gaza remains under relentless assault, with Israeli forces continuing their all-out war on the besieged enclave. Amid the unceasing bombings, Jabalia al-Balad has become the scene of yet another heartbreaking tragedy: over 50 people remain trapped beneath the rubble of a four-storey house, and rescue operations have been suspended due to a severe lack of equipment.

The Palestinian Civil Defense announced late Thursday that it had been forced to halt its efforts after retrieving four bodies and rescuing six wounded from the ruins of the Dardouna family’s home. With no access to heavy machinery, rescuers can do little more than stand by helplessly, while cries from beneath the rubble fade into silence.

“More than 50 souls are still under there,” the statement read. “But we are out of options, out of fuel, out of time.”

The destruction in Jabalia is part of a broader wave of deadly Israeli airstrikes across Gaza. At least 85 Palestinians were killed on Thursday alone, including aid workers in Deir al-Balah and civilians in Gaza City. A water desalination plant in Nuseirat was also targeted, further deepening the humanitarian crisis.

As the Ministry of Health in Gaza reports a staggering toll of 53,762 killed and over 122,000 wounded since 7 October 2023, international outrage remains muted. The Civil Defense warned earlier this week that its ability to function is collapsing under the weight of fuel shortages and the blockade, as entire families remain buried beneath their homes.

Gaza’s people are not dying in accidents — they are being systematically left to die. Under siege, without aid, and with no way to dig their loved ones from the rubble, they are enduring not only bombardment but abandonment.
