An investigation by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz has revealed yet another chilling episode in Gaza’s long catalogue of tragedy: the targeted killing of Mohammed Yasin Suhaib Al-Farra, an elderly Palestinian man with a severe disability, by an Israeli drone in Khan Younis in late May.
Mohammed, who suffered from cerebral palsy and had a visible limp due to a childhood car accident, was walking slowly, alone, when he was spotted by an Israeli drone. Despite his clear physical impairment and unarmed state, he was deliberately struck with a missile, dying instantly.
The Israeli army later claimed he was suspected of acting as a “lookout” and alleged he had been moving through areas linked to militant activity. But his family tells a different story. His sister, Heba Al-Farra, a prominent voice on Palestinian social media, identified her brother’s body and confirmed he was simply making his way home in Al-Satar, a neighbourhood Israel had claimed was "evacuated" but where dozens of civilians, including Mohammed, still remained under shelling.
His body was withheld for hours before being returned to the family, who had already endured unbearable loss. Earlier in the war, an Israeli airstrike killed seven members of the Al-Farra family, including Mohammed’s father and four of his sisters.
This incident is not an anomaly, it is emblematic of a broader pattern of disregard for Palestinian life. The killing of a visibly disabled man, walking home in a devastated city, underlines the impunity with which the Israeli army operates in Gaza. Even in cases where the humanity of the victim is indisputable, justification is manufactured, and accountability is absent.
What remains is a grieving family, a silenced life, and yet another brutal reminder that in Gaza, vulnerability offers no protection, and disability is no shield from the crosshairs.
