Gaza’s Health System on the Edge as Famine Returns Amid Ongoing Blockade

Gaza’s healthcare system teeters on collapse as famine reemerges under the enduring Israeli blockade, with hospitals struggling to function amid severe shortages of medicine, electricity, and clean water. Dr. Munir al-Bursh, Director General of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, warned that critical medical supplies, including intravenous fluids, are still being blocked, creating what he called a “catastrophic reality” for patients across the Strip.

Cancer treatments have halted completely, with at least one death per day attributed to a lack of essential medication. Patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension are increasingly left without care, while a growing outbreak of Guillain-Barré virus threatens further casualties, exacerbated by poor sanitation and contaminated water. Over 22,000 patients urgently require medical evacuation abroad, including 18,000 who have already completed all necessary procedures but await Israeli clearance.

The Ministry of Health highlighted that nearly 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure has been destroyed, leaving two million people displaced and hospitals overwhelmed. Since the start of the genocidal war, more than 77,000 Palestinians have been killed, including 20,000 children and 12,500 women, with hundreds of medical, media, and humanitarian workers among the dead. Tens of thousands more remain wounded. Authorities insist that without immediate international intervention to deliver life-saving medical supplies and restore specialized services, the health system will collapse completely, deepening the suffering of Gaza’s population.
