Ramadan Behind Bars: Palestinian Prisoners Face Darkness and Hunger Under Occupation

Palestinian prisoners in the occupation’s jails are enduring dire conditions during Ramadan, deprived of religious practices and subjected to severe restrictions on food and personal freedom. Palestinian prisoners’ organisations report that over 9,300 Palestinians are currently detained, including 56 women and 350 children, with the fate of many from Gaza remaining unknown due to undisclosed detention locations.

Former prisoner Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya described daily abuse before Iftar, with food sometimes confiscated or discarded. Meals are meagre, often limited to rice and a few vegetables, causing significant weight loss, even among children. Prisoners are also prevented from performing prayers or night supplications and are often denied Iftar and Suhoor at their proper times, intensifying physical and psychological suffering.

Ahmed Abu Taha, another former detainee from Khan Yunis, confirmed that oppression continues regardless of Ramadan, with delayed and nutritionally inadequate meals. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Affairs Authority highlighted that Ofer prison does not inform detainees of Fajr and Maghrib timings, effectively denying proper observance of fasting. Authorities and human rights organisations have been urged to intervene urgently to protect Palestinian prisoners from ongoing violations by the occupation.
