Two French vessels are preparing to depart from Marseille on 4 April, joining a wider international flotilla expected to bring together around one hundred boats with the stated aim of reaching Gaza and challenging the long-standing blockade. The initiative forms part of recurring maritime efforts that have sought, with limited success, to break restrictions imposed on the territory.
Organisers describe the mission as both symbolic and material, combining political messaging with the delivery of humanitarian supplies. The boats are expected to carry essential items, including food and medical aid, while also drawing attention to conditions in Gaza and across the occupied Palestinian territories. Participants frame the effort as an act of solidarity, set against what they describe as an ongoing genocidal war and prolonged restrictions affecting civilian life.
Previous attempts have faced significant obstacles. A similar flotilla in late 2025, which included high-profile activists such as Greta Thunberg, was intercepted at sea, with participants detained and later expelled. Despite this, organisers maintain that increasing the number of vessels improves the likelihood that some may reach their destination, while also amplifying international attention.
The current coalition plans to join other coordinated flotillas in the Mediterranean, with a scheduled convergence later in April following preparatory stops in southern Europe. The effort unfolds in the context of a blockade in place since 2007, alongside continuing tensions and competing narratives surrounding the situation in Gaza, where humanitarian concerns remain acute.
