Father Gabriel Romanelli: “We Must Believe in a Future for Those Who Survive Here”

Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest of the Holy Family Church in Gaza, has spent years staying alongside his community amid relentless bombardment. In his recent book The Ruins and the Light, he recounts the daily struggles and resilience of Gazans during wartime, offering a deeply personal perspective on life under siege.

Alongside two fellow priests and six nuns, Father Romanelli provided shelter to up to 700 people in the parish school and church, where they lived in cramped conditions with scarce water and rationed electricity. The priest himself faced mortal danger on four occasions, sustaining injuries while continuing to care for those trapped in the city. Through it all, he remained committed to his congregation, receiving nightly calls from Pope Francis and offering hope in the midst of devastation.

His testimony is a stark reminder of the human cost of ongoing hostilities, as well as the extraordinary solidarity that sustains communities in Gaza. Father Romanelli stresses the need for humanitarian aid and the importance of believing in a future for those who endure.
