A Palestinian family in occupied East Jerusalem has been forced to live in makeshift tents after Israeli occupation authorities demolished several homes belonging to them in the town of Issawiya, deepening fears over the continued displacement of Palestinian residents across the city.
Nahida Nasser, 73, said four family homes originally built decades ago were reduced to rubble by Israeli bulldozers before temporary shelters erected on the site were also destroyed. The grandmother now lives beside the ruins with her children and around 30 grandchildren, enduring severe shortages of electricity, water and other essential services.
The family has refused to leave the land despite increasingly difficult conditions. Their property in the Rawabi al-Issawiya area has become surrounded by Israeli military infrastructure, including checkpoints, barriers and a nearby military facility, which residents say has isolated the neighbourhood and restricted movement to schools and nearby communities.
Human rights organisations and UN bodies have repeatedly warned that home demolitions and discriminatory planning policies imposed on Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem contribute to forced displacement and violate international law. Palestinians living in the area say such measures form part of a wider effort to alter the demographic character of the city while pushing Palestinian families from their homes.
