Police detain activists after Palestinian flag unfurled at Eiffel Tower

French police detained six activists in Paris after a large Palestinian flag was unfurled from the Eiffel Tower during events marking the anniversary of the Nakba, the mass displacement of Palestinians in 1948. The action drew significant attention in the French capital and quickly circulated across social media platforms.

According to local reports, the activists accessed the monument and displayed the flag from the tower’s first level before police officers intervened and removed them from the site. Authorities later confirmed that several individuals had been taken into custody following the demonstration, which had not received prior authorisation.

The action was later claimed by Extinction Rebellion France, which said the protest was intended to express solidarity with Palestinians and to denounce Israel’s ongoing genocidal war in Gaza. The incident prompted renewed debate online, with supporters describing the protest as a symbolic act against the large-scale destruction in Gaza, while others questioned France’s increasingly restrictive response to pro-Palestine activism.

The detentions come as demonstrations and solidarity actions linked to Gaza continue across several European cities, amid growing criticism of restrictions placed on public expressions of support for Palestinians during Israel’s ongoing genocidal war.
