Health officials in Gaza have warned that the territory’s medical imaging system is nearing collapse after widespread destruction and damage to hospital equipment during Israel’s ongoing genocidal war. The Health Ministry said the loss of vital diagnostic technology has left doctors struggling to provide accurate assessments and urgent treatment for wounded civilians and chronically ill patients.
According to figures released on Tuesday, around 76 per cent of Gaza’s medical imaging equipment is no longer operational, forcing hospitals to depend on a handful of outdated machines working under extreme pressure. Officials said maintenance efforts have been severely hindered by the continuing blockade and the lack of spare parts required to repair damaged devices.
The ministry confirmed that every MRI scanner previously operating in Gaza has been destroyed, bringing MRI services across the territory to a complete halt. Only five CT scanners remain functional out of the 18 that existed before the genocidal war began. The number of working X-ray machines has also dropped sharply, falling from 88 to just 33.
Medical Imaging Unit director Ibrahim Abbas said hospitals are also facing a severe shortage of fluoroscopy equipment used in delicate and complex surgical procedures, with only five units still operating. He warned that the collapse of diagnostic capabilities is placing thousands of patients at heightened risk, as doctors are increasingly unable to carry out timely examinations or identify life-threatening injuries and illnesses with precision.
