After 103 days, Maher Al-Akhras ends his hunger strike

The Palestinian detainee Maher Al-Akhras, who has been on hunger strike for 103 days in protest of his administrative detention, ended today his strike after Israel agreed to release him on November 26.

Israeli authorities agreed to release Maher Al-Akhras on November 26 and not to renew his current administrative detention. He will spend the remainder of his current term in hospital for medical treatment.

Al-Akhras, 49, a father of six children, was detained four times before. He was first detained in 1989, when he spent seven months in detention, for the second time in 2004, when he spent two years in detention and once again in 2009 when he was held for 16 months in administrative detention, and another time in 2018 when he spent 11 months in detention.

He was recently detained on July 27, 2020, and has been sentenced to four months in administrative detention without charge or trial.

Israel currently holds about 350 Palestinian detainees under administrative detention, which is a policy that the Israeli authorities use to detain Palestinians in its jails without charge or trial and without any obvious reasons or evidence.
