Mohammad Abu Ouda, spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, confirmed that Israeli occupation forces have devastated Gaza’s fishing sector infrastructure since the start of the ongoing genocide on October 7, 2023. The destruction has affected key sites, including Gaza City’s main port, docks, fishermen's rooms, and storage facilities along the coast.
Abu Ouda explained that the war has caused significant challenges, with fishermen being directly targeted, deprived of access to the sea, and unable to fish. The Israeli army has damaged fishing tools, sunk boats, and prevented the entry of essential supplies such as spare parts, fishing equipment, and fuel for boat engines, further restricting the already limited fishing zones.
Before the war, Gaza’s fishing sector produced 5,000 tons of marine fish annually, contributing over $21 million to the economy. The sector also relied on fish farming, producing 600 tons with an estimated value of $6 million annually. The destruction of the fishing infrastructure, including the loss of 1,800 boats and 270 fishermen’s rooms, has significantly impacted Gaza’s economy and food security.
To address these challenges, Abu Ouda called for increased local and international support for Gaza’s fishermen, including the provision of boats, fishing equipment, and the rehabilitation of ports. He emphasized the importance of ensuring maritime security and providing financial assistance to help fishermen resume their work, as well as creating temporary employment opportunities to mitigate the rising unemployment rates among displaced fishermen.
