The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has described conditions at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza as “truly horrific” amid the ongoing Israeli attacks.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Ghebreyesus said that WHO teams, alongside their partners, reached the hospital two days ago under continued bombardment, delivering 5,000 litres of fuel along with supplies of food and medicine.
He added that the organisation also evacuated three patients from Kamal Adwan Hospital to Al-Shifa Hospital for further treatment. However, Ghebreyesus criticised Israel for “arbitrarily” denying WHO staff access to the hospital last week, depriving it of specialised medical workers, particularly those providing surgical and obstetric care.
He further noted that ongoing clashes and shelling around the hospital have caused additional damage to oxygen supplies and power generators. Describing the situation as “truly appalling,” he reiterated his call for a ceasefire in Gaza to “protect healthcare services and end this living hell.”
On Monday, medical sources at Kamal Adwan Hospital reported to the media that several Palestinians, including the wounded, had died because Israeli attacks made it impossible for staff to save them.
Since 5 October, the Israeli army has launched a renewed offensive in northern Gaza. Palestinian officials state that Israel aims to forcibly displace residents and transform the area into a buffer zone through relentless bombardment, cutting off access to food, water, and medicine.
