New Study Calls for Greater Investment in Social Media by Palestinian Journalists and Universities to Boost Global Awareness

A recent Palestinian media study emphasizes the necessity for media professionals to invest in social media as a key tool for promoting the Palestinian cause globally. The study, conducted by Palestinian researcher and journalist Ismail Al-Thawabta, urges the continual updating of journalists' knowledge of technological advancements to enhance their ability to disseminate messages effectively through digital platforms.

The research, which forms part of Al-Thawabta’s doctoral thesis in journalism and media, titled "The Extent of Palestinian Media Professionals’ Reliance on Social Media to Reach the Public," calls for a proactive approach in using social media to raise awareness about the Palestinian issue and combat misinformation campaigns.

It also stresses the need for Palestinian universities to incorporate social media education into their curricula, fostering a deeper understanding of digital platforms and their strategic use. The study urges the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, along with universities, to update academic programs to better equip students in journalism, media, and communication with the skills necessary to navigate the modern media landscape.

Furthermore, the study advises Palestinian journalists to adopt measures to mitigate censorship and blocking of Palestinian content on social media, which remains a significant challenge.

While Palestinian citizens use social media extensively, the study highlights that many Palestinian media outlets have been slow to fully embrace these platforms, hindering their ability to reach a global audience.

This research is one of the few to focus on the strategic use of social media within Palestinian journalism and underscores the importance of leveraging digital tools to amplify the Palestinian narrative and counteract global efforts to suppress Palestinian voices.
