Israeli Forces Arrest Jordanian Doctor on Humanitarian Mission to Gaza

On Thursday, December 19, 2023, Dr. Abdullah Salama Al-Blawi, a Jordanian doctor, was detained by Israeli Occupation forces while traveling to Gaza on a humanitarian mission. The mission was affiliated with the PANZMA organization, and Dr. Al-Blawi had received official approval from Israeli authorities. Despite this, he was detained at the border crossing between Jordan and Palestine, known as the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby Bridge).

According to the doctor's family, the accompanying delegation was told by Israeli officials that Dr. Al-Blawi had been detained for "investigation purposes." Later that day, Israeli police informed them that Dr. Al-Blawi had been transferred to the Petah Tikva detention center inside Israel. The family immediately contacted the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to report the arrest and sought legal assistance.

Upon consulting a lawyer, the family learned that Dr. Al-Blawi's detention had been extended until Thursday, December 26, 2024, and that he had been denied access to legal representation since his arrest. No formal reasons for the detention were provided, and the family was not allowed to meet with a lawyer or receive any further details regarding his arrest. The family urgently called on the Jordanian authorities to secure his immediate release.

Dr. Al-Blawi, a general surgeon at the Ruwayshid Government Hospital in Jordan, had previously participated in a similar humanitarian mission to Gaza with the same organization. He had not been informed of any potential issues preventing him from traveling to Gaza again.
