"My father's goal, from the start of his medical career, was to save lives. He remained unwavering in his mission at Kamal Adwan Hospital," says Elias Abu Safiya, son of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.
Elias recalls his father’s final words: "In his last phone call, he asked us to stay patient, hold onto our faith, and never abandon our humanity, even as the war ripped us apart."
A fellow doctor, Elias continues, recounting the events following his father’s arrest at the hospital in Jabalia: "Despite the constant bombardment and destruction, my father continued to treat the wounded under heavy Israeli fire. His spirit remained unbroken."
On the last day of the year, Dr. Hussam’s courage shone brightly. Despite suffering an injury that required urgent surgery, he refused treatment to save the life of a child wounded in an Israeli airstrike. Tragically, the hospital was soon set ablaze by Israeli forces.
Elias firmly asserts that his father committed no crime, and the reason for his arrest remains unclear. "We have no information about my father’s whereabouts or health. The only charge seems to be his decision to stay at Kamal Adwan."
In a poignant scene of pain and resilience, Kamal Adwan Hospital said its final farewell to its medical staff, who had held their ground against the relentless barrage of Israeli planes and gunfire, which only ceased when the Israeli army declared the hospital no longer operational.
The Israeli military escalated its assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital, threatening the staff with immediate evacuation and the arrest of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. The bombardment intensified with explosive robots, drones, and warplanes encircling the hospital and its surroundings.
