Gaza Municipalities Warn of Disaster as Fuel Shortages Halt Water and Sewage Services

Municipal authorities in Gaza have warned of a serious health and environmental disaster as fuel shortages force key services to stop.

In Khan Younis, water wells, sewage stations, and a desalination plant have shut down due to a lack of diesel. This puts over 1.1 million residents and displaced people at risk, especially as cold weather and storms approach, leaving most municipal services unable to operate.

The Nuseirat municipality in central Gaza, which supports many residents and displaced families, also announced that its services would stop within 48 hours if no fuel arrives. Officials have called on international organizations to urgently provide fuel to keep water and sewage systems running.

The fuel crisis has worsened recently, with Israeli restrictions on fuel supplies and reports of theft under the watch of Israeli forces. Limited fuel is being used for hospitals, bakeries, and essential services, but many facilities, including bakeries, have already shut down.

Without more fuel, garbage will pile up in residential and displacement areas, increasing the risk of diseases. Winter storms could also flood streets and displacement camps, worsening the crisis. Severe water shortages continue as many wells and infrastructure have been destroyed, leaving Gaza residents in an increasingly desperate situation.
