CBS News Highlights Israel’s Policy of Silencing the Press in Gaza War
CBS News reported that Israel has been targeting journalists as part of its ongoing war in Gaza since October 2023, which has resulted in over 46,000 deaths, including 300 aid workers and 1,000 medical professionals, according to the United Nations.
The Committee to Protect Journalists confirmed the deaths of 160 journalists, most of them Palestinians, making this the deadliest period for journalists since 1992.
Former U.S. diplomat Hala Rariet described Israeli attacks on journalists as systematic, explaining that she proposed a White House statement calling for the protection of journalists, but it was rejected on the grounds that it was "controversial."
Israel has blocked international media from entering Gaza, forcing Palestinian journalists to cover the conflict under the threat of hunger and airstrikes. Other journalists, such as photographer Said Al-Nabahin, were killed last week.
ARTICLE 19 condemned Israel's ongoing attacks on journalists and called for the International Criminal Court to investigate, noting that the war on Gaza is one of the deadliest conflicts for journalists in modern history.
