Netanyahu’s Silence on the Gaza Deal: What’s Behind It?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained silent on the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal announced Wednesday, despite statements from US President Joe Biden, Qatar’s Prime Minister, and Hamas. This silence is due to the political challenges Netanyahu faces, particularly accusations of blocking similar deals, though his officials deny this.

While many Israelis welcome the return of hostages, some nationalist ministers in Netanyahu’s government fear the deal could lead to lasting peace in Gaza, limiting military action against Hamas.

Tensions are rising within Netanyahu’s coalition, with ministers like Itamar Ben Gvir threatening to collapse the government, and Bezalel Smotrich opposing the deal.

Netanyahu’s office has emphasized his firm stance in negotiations, rejecting Hamas’ last-minute demands. On Thursday, Israel accused Hamas of backtracking on parts of the deal, delaying cabinet approval until full compliance is confirmed.

Hamas reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire.
