Qatar’s Prime Minister from Davos: We Hope for the Palestinian Authority’s Return to Gaza

Davos (Switzerland) – Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani expressed hope on Tuesday that the Palestinian Authority (PA) would regain control of Gaza once the war with Israel concludes.

Speaking at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Switzerland, Sheikh Mohammed’s remarks came two days after a ceasefire agreement took effect, ending a 15-month-long war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Qatar played a key mediating role in brokering the truce.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that Gaza's residents—not any other country—should determine how the territory is governed.

He added that Qatar hopes to see the PA return to Gaza and form a government that genuinely addresses the needs of the people, noting the extensive destruction in the region and the long road to recovery.

The question of Gaza's governance after the war was not directly addressed in the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which focused on halting hostilities and initiating the release of detainees after 15 months of Qatar-, Egypt-, and U.S.-mediated negotiations.

Israel rejects any governing role for Hamas, which controlled Gaza before the war, and is equally opposed to a return of the Palestinian Authority, which was established under the Oslo Accords three decades ago. The PA, dominated by the Fatah movement founded by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, has faced opposition from Hamas since being ousted from Gaza in 2007.
