On Friday evening, nine countries established "The Hague Group," a coalition aimed at ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and supporting Palestinian self-determination and statehood. The announcement was made during a conference in The Hague, Netherlands, with representatives from South Africa, Malaysia, Colombia, Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, Namibia, Senegal, and Belize.
The founding countries, part of the Global South, emphasized their commitment to upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly the inalienable right of people to self-determination. Their statement expressed grave concern over the loss of life, livelihoods, and cultural heritage in Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories, attributing these losses to Israeli actions. The group condemned these actions as "international crimes" and reaffirmed its commitment to ending the occupation and supporting an independent Palestinian state.
The statement included six key commitments, including preventing the transfer of arms to Israel for use in violations of international law, supporting UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/ES-10/24, and backing the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants against Israeli officials. Additionally, the group pledged to uphold the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza and take concrete steps to end the occupation and support Palestinian self-determination.
The Hague Group called on other nations to join its efforts, stressing the importance of international law as the foundation for peace and global cooperation. This initiative marks a significant shift in international alliances, with a focus on holding Israel accountable for its actions in the occupied territories.
