Gaza Municipality Warns of Sewage Crisis as Infrastructure Collapses

The Gaza Municipality has raised alarms over the severe damage to the sewage sector, warning of an escalating environmental and health disaster. Spokesperson Eng. Asim Al-Nabiyeh told *Filistin* newspaper that the mixing of rainwater with sewage in the Sheikh Radwan lagoon has created a critical situation, further worsening the suffering of Gaza’s residents.

Despite completing a sewage diversion line to the sea, the municipality lacks the fuel needed to operate pumps efficiently. “Rising water levels during weather depressions increase the risk of flooding, and fuel is urgently needed to prevent disasters,” Al-Nabiyeh explained.

Israeli airstrikes have devastated Gaza’s sewage infrastructure, damaging key pipelines and treatment plants. The main sewage line to the Sheikh Radwan lagoon is severely compromised, while Station 7B in Zeitoun has stopped functioning entirely, causing raw sewage to flood streets and flow into the lagoon.

The municipality urgently requires maintenance equipment, heavy machinery, and fuel to address the crisis, but repeated appeals have gone unanswered. Al-Nabiyeh stressed that a long-term solution depends on restoring critical facilities, like the Sheikh Ajlin treatment plant, warning that delays could lead to catastrophic health and environmental impacts.

The destruction stems from Israel’s ongoing conflict, which began on October 7, 2023. Despite a ceasefire brokered in January 2025, Israel has refused to proceed to the second phase of the agreement and has closed all crossings, blocking vital humanitarian aid and threatening further escalation. Gaza’s infrastructure remains in ruins, leaving its people to face unimaginable hardships.
