Under the Shadow of Collapse: Palestinian Lives in Gaza

In Gaza, homes may appear intact, but they are often precarious shelters, concealing deep fractures and vulnerabilities. The ongoing siege has forced families to live under a "roof of death," caught between harsh weather and the threat of collapse.

Hamdan Yassin, from Al-Zaytoun, voices the fear shared by many: his home, with rain seeping through cracks, shelters five families in a single room. Each night, they fear falling debris, a constant reminder of their vulnerability.

Zakeya Ahmed echoes this sentiment, describing how even strong winds trigger terror as her partially destroyed home lacks safety features. Their lives are not mere statistics; they are human beings longing for dignity and safety.

The humanitarian crisis is dire, with thousands of homes destroyed and a blockade limiting rebuilding efforts. Recent evacuations in northern Gaza highlight the danger, as residents flee collapsing buildings, fearing for their lives.

With an estimated $30 billion needed for reconstruction, the scale of devastation is immense, particularly in Gaza City. International reports reveal that the destruction surpasses historical precedents, leaving families to navigate a landscape of despair.

Yet, amid this suffering, the resilience of the Palestinian people endures. Their stories reflect a profound yearning for safety, stability, and dignity in the face of relentless adversity.
