The Palestinian-led Hind Rajab Foundation has launched urgent legal efforts to block Benjamin Netanyahu's controversial visit to Hungary this Wednesday, demanding the Israeli prime minister's arrest under an International Criminal Court warrant for war crimes in Gaza.
Since the ICC issued its arrest warrant last November, this marks Netanyahu's first trip to a member state, with Budapest openly declaring it will flout international law by refusing to detain him. The move has drawn fierce condemnation from human rights groups, with Amnesty International warning it "sends a dangerous message that war criminals can act with impunity."
Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán personally assured Netanyahu of "security and freedom" during the visit, calling the ICC charges "outrageous" in a clear snub to international justice. This comes as Israel's bombardment of Gaza enters its sixth month, having killed over 164,000 Palestinians and left 1.5 million homeless since October.
Legal experts warn Hungary's stance undermines the ICC's authority, while Palestinian advocates stress it greenlights continued atrocities. As Netanyahu lands in Budapest, the world watches whether Europe will uphold justice - or sacrifice Palestinian lives for political convenience.
For Gaza's survivors, the visit represents another bitter reminder of the international community's failure to hold Israel accountable for what the ICC calls "crimes against humanity" including starvation tactics and deliberate targeting of civilians.
