WFP Warns of Famine Risk in Gaza as Aid Access Remains Fragile

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a stark warning over deteriorating food security in Gaza, calling for uninterrupted humanitarian access to stave off famine. In a statement on Sunday, the UN agency stressed that while some aid trucks are now entering the territory, consistent and safe distribution remains a critical challenge.

The WFP noted that most of Gaza’s population still faces severe food shortages, with humanitarian operations largely suspended since early March. Although Israel approved a new aid framework in May, deliveries have only recently resumed through a contested distribution system—one that UN agencies and NGOs argue lacks both efficiency and impartiality.

The agency emphasized that sporadic aid shipments are insufficient to meet Gaza’s escalating needs, urging sustained and unimpeded access to prevent a full-blown famine. Without reliable humanitarian corridors, it warned, starvation will continue to tighten its grip on the besieged enclave.
