UN Security Council to Decide on Gaza Ceasefire as Palestinian Death Toll Rises

The United Nations Security Council will vote today on a critical resolution demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, where Israeli attacks have killed more than 54,000 Palestinians since October 2023. The draft, pushed by ten elected Council members, also calls for the lifting of all Israeli blockades on humanitarian aid, as starvation and disease spread across the besieged enclave.

With entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble and hospitals overwhelmed, Palestinian officials warn that the deliberate obstruction of food, water, and medical supplies has turned Gaza into a wasteland. The resolution further demands the release of all Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, alongside detainees taken by Hamas.

The vote follows the massacre of at least 27 Palestinians near an aid convoy in Rafah, where desperate crowds faced Israeli gunfire while scrambling for food. Aid agencies accuse Israel of systematically restricting and attacking relief efforts, leaving millions in catastrophic conditions.

As global pressure mounts, Palestinians await a decision that could either bring a halt to the slaughter or condemn them to further bloodshed. The U.S., Israel’s staunchest ally, holds the power to veto, an act that would signal continued complicity in what many now call a genocide.
