A Bullet for a Meal: Gaza Child Shot While Seeking Aid

In Gaza, survival comes at a deadly cost. Thirteen-year-old Yazid Musleh lies in a hospital bed, his small body pierced by an Israeli bullet, shot while trying to collect food. His crime: being hungry.

Displaced from Rafah to the Al-Mawasi area with his family, Yazid had accompanied his father and brother to a U.S.-backed aid distribution point in northern Rafah, one of the few places where food is still sporadically handed out. But instead of returning with a meal, he was rushed to Nasser Hospital with his intestines spilling from a stomach wound.

“We went where they told us was safe,” his father said. “There is no such thing as safe in Gaza.” His words echo the grim reality for over two million Palestinians caught in a war that targets not only homes and hospitals, but hunger itself.

Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire on civilians at aid points. Since the launch of these “humanitarian” centres, more than 100 people have been killed and hundreds injured in their vicinity. The UN calls it a “deadly trap.” For families like Yazid’s, it’s a choice between starving or stepping into the line of fire.

With borders sealed and Gaza’s health system in ruins, Yazid’s chances of receiving proper medical care are fading fast. Like thousands of others, he has become a symbol of a besieged people forced to beg for food under gunfire, while the world looks on.
