Reports from Jerusalem indicate a sharp escalation in demolitions and eviction-related measures since the start of 2026, with local officials describing what they see as an accelerating pattern of displacement affecting Palestinian communities across the city. According to figures released by the Jerusalem Governorate, 147 demolition operations were carried out within the first four months of the year alone, a scale they argue reflects a sustained push reshaping residential life in key neighbourhoods.
The most affected areas include Silwan, Jabal Al-Mukaber, Sheikh Jarrah, and Wadi Al-Joz, where structures have reportedly been targeted under administrative justifications related to building permissions and land registration. Officials argue these measures are concentrated near sensitive religious and historical sites, including the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and describe the current phase as one of the most intensive in recent years.
The Governorate further notes that eviction orders have accumulated over time, with approximately 25,000 issued prior to October 2023, alongside thousands of additional notices stretching back decades. In West Bank and East Jerusalem more broadly, demolition activity is said to have extended to hundreds of homes and structures annually, with 397 cases recorded in 2025 alone and 234 demolitions reported during March, including multiple residential units.
Alongside these measures, officials point to ongoing infrastructure expansion and settlement development, which they say is contributing to a broader transformation of the city’s demographic and geographic landscape. Expansion of municipal boundaries and land reclassification are cited as part of this trend, alongside long-term planning initiatives that, according to Palestinian sources, further increase pressure on neighbourhoods already facing repeated demolition orders.
