Sigrid Kaag, the UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, briefed the Security Council on the rapidly worsening conditions in Gaza. After a closed-door meeting, she described the situation as “completely devastated,” highlighting the immense suffering faced by civilians across the region.
Kaag painted a bleak picture of life in Gaza, where people of all ages are enduring inhumane conditions. She pointed out that significant obstacles are preventing the UN from delivering essential aid, exacerbating the population's hardships. Kaag also warned of the increasing risk of lawlessness and social breakdown, with looting and instability threatening the already fragile social fabric.
Despite the challenges, Kaag referenced past successes, such as the polio vaccination campaign, to demonstrate that political will could lead to progress. She urged all parties involved to prioritize agreements and uphold commitments to facilitate aid delivery. She also noted that the UN continues to request critical supplies from the Israeli government, particularly for winter and health needs.
Kaag emphasized the vital role of UNRWA in Gaza, calling it “indispensable” for providing aid. Additionally, she stressed the urgent need for the reopening of the Rafah border crossing to ensure that humanitarian assistance can reach those in need.
