Iman Al-Shanti, the journalist who tragically lost her life, continued to highlight the harsh realities of fear, displacement, and hunger until her final moments. Despite enduring these immense challenges, she remained unwavering in her decision to stay in Gaza, determined to resist the Israeli occupation and prevent it from overtaking her home. Even in the darkest times, Iman spread messages of hope, believing that a beautiful end was near. Unfortunately, this end arrived when an Israeli airstrike took the lives of Iman, her husband, and three of their children, leaving their eldest daughter, Banan, seriously injured.
The brief time between Iman’s last Facebook post and the tragic news of her family’s death was poignant. In her post, she expressed disbelief at still being alive, saying, "May God have mercy on the martyrs." Her friend, journalist Israa Al-Areer, described Iman as a source of unwavering optimism, always spreading positivity despite the hardships. "She was exceptional in every aspect of life," Al-Areer said. Even when starving and thirsty, Iman would share her food with anyone in need, demonstrating her selflessness.
Iman’s last phone call to journalist Ruba Al-Ajrami ended suddenly when the sound of heavy shelling interrupted their conversation. Ruba recalled that Iman was checking on her children when the line went dead. Al-Areer also reflected on Iman’s influence on her colleagues, saying, "She always raised the slogan ‘Tomorrow is better’ and spread optimism everywhere." Iman was known for her warmth, creativity, and dedication to journalism, dreaming of becoming a documentary filmmaker. Her loss is deeply felt in the journalistic community, as she was a source of inspiration to all who knew her.
