British universities accused of monitoring pro-Palestine students and staff through private intelligence contracts

An investigative report has revealed that a dozen universities in the United Kingdom have been engaging private security and intelligence-linked firms to monitor students and academic staff expressing support for Palestine. The practice reportedly involves surveillance of social media activity and internal assessments framed around “security risks”, raising concerns over academic freedom and civil liberties on campus.

According to the findings, one of the most recent institutions to be linked to such arrangements is Cardiff Metropolitan University. It is alleged that the university, alongside others including several of the country’s most prominent academic institutions, has commissioned external contractors staffed in part by former military intelligence personnel to observe protest activity and monitor individuals involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy.

The same investigation indicates that these firms have been tasked with tracking online behaviour, mapping student networks, and producing internal reports categorising certain forms of political expression as potential security threats. Internal communications reportedly show that student organisations and invited speakers have been included in monitoring lists, while some academic figures have also been subject to surveillance due to their public positions on Gaza.

Financial records cited in the reporting suggest that hundreds of thousands of pounds have been channelled to these security contractors since 2022. The universities named include several leading academic institutions across England. One of the firms involved is said to have originated within an elite university security unit before expanding into a commercial intelligence operation.
