Barbara Lefebvre to Face Trial Over Remarks Calling for Gaza’s Population to Be Removed

A French media commentator is due to appear before a criminal court in Paris later this year following remarks about Gaza that have triggered legal action on charges of incitement to hatred and endorsement of criminal acts. The case centres on statements made during a televised broadcast in 2025, in which she suggested that Gaza’s civilian population bore responsibility for events linked to the genocidal war and argued that the territory should be emptied of its inhabitants.

The proceedings follow a complaint lodged by SOS Racisme, which challenged the legality of the statements. During the broadcast, the commentator voiced support for proposals envisioning Gaza as a depopulated zone, asserting that residents should relocate elsewhere. The remarks have since drawn sustained criticism, with legal scrutiny focusing on whether they amount to unlawful incitement and justification of violence within the context of the ongoing genocidal war.

This is not the first time the commentator has faced judicial consequences over public statements. She was previously fined after remarks targeting minority communities in France, which led to a temporary suspension from broadcasting. The upcoming hearing, scheduled for September 2026, is expected to revisit broader questions around media responsibility, freedom of expression and the legal boundaries of public discourse when addressing highly sensitive international crises.
