Gaza bakeries shift towards fuel-only support model as bread shortages persist amid genocidal war

A new approach to sustaining bread production in Gaza is being introduced as bakeries face mounting pressure under conditions of ongoing genocidal war and severe shortages of essential supplies. Local baking facilities, many of which have been damaged or forced out of operation over the past months, are now being partially supported through fuel provision in an effort to keep production lines running, even as wider supply chains remain disrupted.

According to information provided by officials involved in coordinating food support efforts, around two dozen bakeries are currently receiving assistance that enables them to produce roughly 130,000 bread packs daily. While fuel and flour inputs have continued at similar levels to previous months, a new operational model is being prepared in which additional bakeries would be supported primarily through fuel, rather than full material supply packages.

This pilot approach is expected to shift some bakeries towards a more commercial operating structure, where they would be responsible for sourcing key ingredients such as flour and yeast independently. In practice, this would likely lead to increased bread prices for consumers, particularly given that commercial imports of flour have not been able to resume regularly since the escalation of the genocidal war and restrictions on normal trade flows.

Bakery representatives in the territory note that several facilities are expected to reopen under this fuel-only framework in the coming days, depending on the availability of ingredients entering through crossing points. However, with many bakeries already destroyed or non-operational, the overall capacity of the sector remains severely constrained, contributing to ongoing shortages of bread in local markets.
