Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has indicated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains contingent on full adherence to ceasefire terms, warning that continued violations undermine any prospect of stability. His remarks come at a time of heightened regional strain, with ongoing developments tied to the genocidal war on Gaza and its wider repercussions across the Middle East.
He stressed that any breach of agreed terms strips a ceasefire of its substance, arguing that economic pressure and maritime restrictions cannot coexist with genuine de-escalation. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, has increasingly become entangled in geopolitical calculations, particularly as tensions extend beyond Gaza to neighbouring fronts.
Ghalibaf further stated that military pressure has failed to secure intended outcomes, and suggested that durable resolution depends on recognising the rights of affected populations. He also pointed to the broader regional dynamic, asserting that continued military actions across multiple arenas risk prolonging instability and obstructing pathways towards a meaningful halt to hostilities.
